The hot-vintage Castello del Terriccio 2017 Lupicaia (made with 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot) is a hearty and big-boned wine that delivers an extra dose of power and concentration. Its aromas of baked blackberry, earth, spice pie, toast and eucalyptus are presented with very broad brush strokes. The first vintage made was 1993, and Merlot sometimes appears in the blend, although it was removed here. The wine will soon benefit from five additional hectares of vines planted in 2019 and 2020. Those grapes are used in the Tassinaia for now, but as the plants get older, that fruit will be directed here.

This is a gorgeous, crunchy red with structure and freshness. It’s medium to full bodied with a creamy texture and a delicious aftertaste of currants, berries and blood orange. Drinkable now, but better in two or three years.
