Score 87/100 · Drink 2024-2029, Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, Jul 2023

Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with 11% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 V is firm, darkly structured and more tannic than the 2015 vintage. Full-bodied, the wine shows a generous amount of oak before offering firm tannic grip that clamps down on the gum line and doesn’t let go. Perhaps the wine needs a bit more time in the bottle. After aging for a year and a half in 100% new French oak barrels, the wine then spent an additional four years in bottle. 6,048 bottles were produced.

The 2016 Vergelegen V has a well-defined bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, melted tar and hints of liquorice. The palate is very smooth and quite plush in style; with pliant tannins and fine acidity, it's voluminous and powerful towards the finish with faint hints of blue fruit intermixed with black pepper and graphite. Like the 2015, this needs another couple of years in bottle.
