Healthy medium red. Reticent aromas of ripe raspberry and spices are lifted by a pungent rocky element. Rich and savory in the mouth, with its red fruit and spice flavors complemented by a strong stony element and saline minerality. Finishes with a serious dusting of ripe tannins, a sappy note of cherry and very good length. This wine is destined to be bottled in magnums.

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Pitures comes from chalky soils strewn with small stones, and like last year, it will be only bottled in magnum. It has plenty of black cherry and blackcurrant fruit on the nose, lively and pretty, just a subtle black olive note developing in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with succulent ripe tannin, well structured with a sorbet-like freshness, the finish offering blood orange and tangerine among the red berry fruit. Superb. Grab one of those mags.

Started in 2015; before it was an ingredient in Volnay premier cru. Just one pièce (three in 2017). Pebbly clay. Lots of crunchy fruit with masses of acidity. Real intensity and depth. Very long indeed. (JR)
