(from thin soil in the lieu-dit Queue de Hareng, which lies just below the forest and is adjacent to Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles; mostly older vines but some were planted in 2006): Medium red. Musky aromas of plum and redcurrant show a truffley perfume but come across as fresh. Supple, savory wine, more pliant and rich than normal; the slightly saline redcurrant fruit is dominated by earth and crushed chalk notes. The tannins here are silkier than usual for this cuvée and the wine displays much more verve than a barrel sample I tried in late 2015. Still, this will probably give greatest pleasure over the next five years.

From vines in Brochon that touch Evocelles in the lieu dit "Queue de Hareng," the 2014 Côtes de Nuits Villages has a transparent, carefree bouquet with vibrant licorice-tinged fruit. The palate is well defined, supple in the mouth, very smooth with well judged acidity, the 50% new oak rounding the finish and adding a silky sheen. This will be difficult to resist in its youth but it has the substance to age.
