Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru En Orveau has a crisp and slightly leafy bouquet, more black fruit here than red, infused with bay leaf and thyme. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly coarse tannin, but that can be countenanced thanks to the attractive fruit, red plums, damson, wild strawberry and the structure on the finish that suggests it will repay 4-5 years in the cellar. Easily the best wine that I have tasted from this previously under-performing estate. Tasted September 2016.

Mid ruby. Sweet, rich, very flattering fruit. Lovely smooth tannins are almost obliterated by the sweet Pinot. Nice fresh acidity, excellent vivacity as well as the sweetness. (JR)
