Opening in the glass with aromas of cherries, sweet berry fruit, warm spices, burning embers and espresso roast, the 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes is medium to full-bodied, velvety and lively, with a deep core of fruit and ample reserves of powdery tannin that makes its presence felt on the finish. This is one cuvée where the evolution in Maxime Cheurlin's winemaking style is especially evident, as what was formerly a very approachable wine has become rather serious.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has an open, expressive bouquet of cranberry, wild strawberry and rose petal aromas, perhaps not quite as precise as the nascent 2019. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, slightly tarry black fruit and quite a persistent residue of cracked black pepper.
Like the straight Vosne, there is enough reduction present to overshadow the fruit but not the pretty spice elements. The round, caressing and more refined middle weight flavors retain a lovely sense of vibrancy that carries over to the well-detailed, delicious and lingering finish that is firm enough to suggest that a decade or more will be necessary to see this at its best.
About the producer
Domaine Georges Noëllat, based in the village of Vosne-Romanée is today run by Maxime Cheurlin. Cheurlin took over the domaine in 2010 – aged just 20 – and has since transformed its reputation as one of the finest Burgundy wine producers.
