50/50 Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. 18–24 months in new tonneaux. 2016 was cooler than 2011. Mid garnet. Rich, deep, dark-sweet fruit with the start of dried cherry and leather. Smooth and leathery on the palate, yet juicy and amenable in the roundness of the tannins. Still lots of fruit at the core. Deep and chewy on the finish. Much more about the place than the varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot aged in French oak barrels for 22 months followed by a year in bottle. Impenetrable dark ruby. Gorgeous nose of cassis with a suggestion of redcurrant and with complex oak notes. Cool, yet concentrated, generous cassis fruit on the palate with finely grained tannins. Hedonistic and sensationally balanced. Plenty of concentration on the finish, yet more Médoc than Napa. (WS)

The rich and generous Castello del Terriccio 2016 Lupicaia is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The wine is identified with the name of estate owner G.A. Rossi di Medelana on the front label. It opens to dark fruit intensity with blackberry, black cherry, tar, leather and cured tobacco. There is a lot of pretty concentration in this vintage, and it is well balanced by the linearity and precision of the mouthfeel.
