Score 91/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2000

Full, deep red. Superripe, complex aromas of roasted raspberry, pie cherry, leather and spice; but more fruit-driven and less torrifié. Liqueur-like ripeness in the mouth, but less supple today than the '97 Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges Pruliers, with very primary flavors and firm backbone. Surprisingly fresh and delineated for a wine this ripe. Finishes very long, with firm but ripe tannins. This wine, too, may eventually rate an even higher score.

Score 91-93/100 · Drink 2002-2010, Pierre Rovani, Oct 1999

With aeration, the tightly wound 1997 Nuits-St.-Georges Les St. Georges reluctantly revealed licorice, chocolate-covered black cherries, and fresh herbs. This expansive, rich, medium to full-bodied, muscular wine is jam-packed with chocolate, mocha, and coffee flavors. It has extraordinary palate presence, a plump, satin-textured mouth-feel, and a long, spicy, ripe, tannin-filled finish. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2010+. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel (205) 980-8802.
