The 2018 Beaune Clos du Roi 1er Cru offers Morello cherry and cranberry on the nose, just a very slight confit element in the background. Lively. The palate is medium-bodied with a saccharine opening and brown sugar. Touches of tar infuse the red fruit, though it is missing some delineation and nerve on the finish. Par for the course, though it shows some melioration in the glass. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2018 Beaune Clos du Roi 1er Cru is matured with 30% whole bunch and 50% new oak. It has a very attractive bouquet of brambly red fruit, rose petals and light undergrowth aromas. The medium-bodied palate offers a dash of white pepper on the opening. Well balanced, with quite a structured and serious finish. Excellent.
