The most immediate attribute of this 2018 L-Block Shiraz is its ripeness. The fruit is ripe to the point of bagging—15% alcohol confirms this—however it seems the right direction for a Rhône producer such as Chapoutier to take. It has notes of grated nutmeg, cinnamon, freshly tanned hide, mulberry compote and redcurrants. Further to this, the array of woodsy spices, savory tannin splay and overall exoticism places it in a good position. Distinct, spicy and full. Very good.

Rich, peppery, spicy, chocolatey. Heavyweight but balanced. Not jammy, but not especially complex at this stage. Lots of heat on the finish. (RH)
