40% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc grown in the Eden and Barossa Valleys. Named after the favourite instrument in the Henschke family brass band. Fruit was harvested between 15 March and 14 May. De-stemmed and crushed, the juice was left on skins for between 6 and 14 days followed by open fermentation and pumping over twice daily. Matured in a mixture of French and American oak, 15% of which was new. TA 6.2g/l, pH 3.6. Sweet tarry and rather soupy. Lots of alcohol and acidity – surely not the most representative Henschke wine? Shiraz/Cabernet/Merlot blend, the old Keyneton Estate (see here in members' forum) . Mellow with an attractive dry finish and some obviously top quality oak. Lovely now though very vigorous still. Dense but not sweet. Slight hint of dustiness – attractive. (JR)
The 2004 Keyneton Estate “Euphonium” Shiraz is purple-colored with fragrant aromas of toast, black cherry, scorched earth, pencil lead, and blueberry. Tightly knit but well balanced, it will need 5-7 years in the cellar to unwind and reveal its full potential. At that point, my score will look conservative.
