Coming all from Chenin Blanc grown on slate soils, the 2014 Savennières Fides comes from four separate sites and was brought up all in barrels. It’s a rich, powerful wine that has fabulous purity in its caramelized lemon, white currants, brioche, and crushed rock-driven aromas and flavors. With medium to full body, some background oak, and an almost structured feel on the palate, this is a serious Savennières geared for the dinner table. It’s beautiful today yet I assume it will easily keep for another 10-15 years. This estate was created by Eric Morgat in 1995, at the young age of 25, when he purchased and restored a handful of abandoned parcels. Today, he pulls from 6 hectares of organically farmed Chenin Blanc and produces two cuvées, an Anjou Litus and a Savennières Fides that is reviewed here.

The citrus-colored 2014 Savennières Fidès offers a clear and flinty, still yeasty flavored bouquet of ripe pineapples along with some lemon flavors. Creamy textured, with a tropical juiciness and a remarkable finesse, this is a full-bodied, elegant and firmly structured Chenin with a lingering purity and stimulating grip and salinity. It is powerful but also well dosed and harmonious. Bottled in April 2016, this wine should be aged for another 3-4 years to unfold its charms fully. Total production (from five hectares) is 16,480 bottles and 750 magnums.
