Pouring a jeweled ruby, the 2018 Barolo Brunate needs some air on opening before revealing significant depth and balance for this cooler and wet vintage, with notes of balsamic herbs, black raspberry, and mineral earth. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins, pure red cherry fruit fills the palate, and the wine has a long floral finish with rose petals and a stony texture. It is deserving of at least another year in the cellar. Drink 2024-2040.

The Figli Luigi Oddero 2018 Barolo is thin and rather timid in terms of its intensity. This laidback approach is reflective of a vintage that produced understated wines overall across the appellation. Redcurrant, dried violet, spice and light shadings of licorice add some aromatic momentum on the bouquet, but again, this vintage holds back in the end.

Bottled July 2020 'to preserve the fruit flavours'. 18–25 days on the skins. Grapes came from Vignarionda, Scarrone and Rive in La Morra. Just mid ruby and lustrous. A very pretty but shy nose of cherry stones with a peppery tingle and a hint of red bell pepper. Super-elegant palate with a fine yet firm structure. Exceptional for this level. (WS)
