The second wine of the estate, the 2014 Calon Ségur Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is a terrific charmer that overdelivers in 2014. Offering both red and black fruits, plenty of spice, and leafy herbs, this medium-bodied, textured, balanced Saint Estephe is perfect for drinking over the coming decade.

The 2014 Marquis de Calon feels a little overdone on the nose and lacked the delineation and detail of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, plenty of tarry black fruit with a tinge of graphite towards the finish. Not bad, although it is missing some charm. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Deep crimson. Rich and juicy. More flesh than some of the drier Pessac-Léognans. Clean even if not thrillingly deep flavoured. (JR)
