Score 92/100 · Drink 2023-2050, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Apr 2018

The 2015 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Vergelesses displays just as much potential from bottle as it did from barrel, wafting from the glass with a complex bouquet of plums, chocolate, grilled squab and forest floor. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich and concentrated, its chassis of fine-grained tannins more assertive than the Savigny Lavières, its finish long and taut. This will need a few years in the cellar, but it will evolve into a beautiful bottle of Les Vergelesses.

(20% vendange entier ; from deep, iron-rich clay soil just below the hill): Bright red-ruby. The nose reveals lower-toned earth and spice notes but its redcurrant and licorice aromas are lifted by a floral element. A bit higher in CO2 today, which gives the wine's intense, chewy fruit a penetrating quality. Displays an almost chocolatey ripeness and noteworthy density. Finishes with good energy, fairly smooth tannins and nice persistence. De Nicolay is always worried about extracting rustic tannins from this fruit but noted that the estate always does very gentle crushing of its grapes.
