The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes unwinds in the glass with scents of smoky pears and pear honey, framed by a subtle touch of reduction. Medium to full-bodied, round and fleshy, with a lively spine of acidity, it concludes with a mouthwateringly saline finish.

Three parcels near Puligny, including 75-year-old vines in Les Beuttes. In 2019, same treatment (1-year-old 350-litre barrel, then 8 months in tank) but longer élevage than the St-Aubins: this will be bottled in April 2021, the St-Aubins in December or January. Tank sample. Broad and nutty on the nose. Lacks the tension of the best St-Aubins. But there is real chew on the end and slightly looser fruit on the palate. I’m more aware of the alcohol in this wine, and a certain sweetness. (JR)
