Tasting notes
This is one of the most impressive second wines this vintage, showing a richness and framework that makes for a serious wine. There’s a savoury character to the structure, framing bright yet dark, plummy fruit, with a freshness that lifts the finish. Blend: 71% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc

The 2022 La Dame de Montrose has a well-defined, quite expressive bouquet with minerally blackberry and bilberry fruit. Quite floral, this is nuanced and well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, gentle grip, cedar and pencil lead infusing the classically styled finish. Very fine. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.
One of the smart purchases this year is the 2022 La Dame de Montrose, a second wine that would embarrass numerous classified growths. Based on 71% Merlot, the Dame sees a more reductive élevage than the grand vin, which is perfectly adapted to this variety. Opening to reveal aromas of sweet cassis, cherries and berries mingled with hints of violets, spices and orange zest, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with a powerful but controlled profile.
