Score 93-96/100 · Drink 2004-2018, Robert Parker, Oct 2001

The dense, opulent, flamboyant 1998 Barolo Vigna Rionda possesses soaring aromas of plum and kirsch liqueur, smoke, balsam wood, black tea, licorice, and tobacco. Opulent, full-bodied, and gorgeously pure, it has enough glycerin, fruit, and tannin to fill and stain the mouth. This blockbuster Barolo requires 2-3 years of cellaring; it will drink beautifully between 2004-2018. Full ruby-red. Reduced nose hints at cherry, marzipan, licorice, underbrush and oak. Lush and chewy on entry but dominated by its backbone today and rather unforthcoming in the middle palate. Finishes with grainy, slightly tough tannins. At least as backward as the Marenca, but appears to have more extract.
