Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Pommard 1er Cru Fremiers from Louis Boillot has a touch of mint tincturing the brambly black fruit, strong tertiary notes developing in the glass and a hint of dried violet petals. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and well-judged acidity. It does not quite deliver the length, but one can appreciate the balance and purity of the fruit here. It constitutes considerate winemaking in a difficult vintage for Pommard.

Medium red. Exhilarating high-pitched aromas of redcurrant, crushed cherry, blood orange, spices and mint. Densely packed and sweet, showing a compelling juiciness to its red fruit flavors that reminded me more of 2013--and fresher in bottle than it appeared to be from barrel last year. Finishes with silky, suave tannins and terrific slowly mounting length. This should evolve very slowly.

Good bright medium red. Subdued aromas of red fruits, stone and earth; not showing quite the eclat of the Volnays here. Pungent raspberry and mineral flavors are complicated by a note of menthol. Finishes with dusty, substantial tannins and a lingering menthol quality. A tad dry after the Caillerets but the tannins are ultimately ripe.
