Inky ruby. An expressive bouquet evokes ripe cherry and blueberry, and suggestions of candied flowers, incense and smoked meat add complexity. Sappy and expansive on the palate, offering intense, smoke-tinged black and blue fruit and violet candy flavors that are given spine by a core of juicy acidity. Shows excellent clarity and dark fruit thrust on the gently tannic finish, which lingers with strong tenacity.

As with all the single vineyard bottlings, I also tasted two vintages of the Syrah, including the 2014 Pago la Garduña. This was one of the last plots to be picked in this warmer and earlier year, on October 6th. All grapes are moved by gravity, fermented with indigenous yeasts and the wines clarified with egg whites before bottling. Fleshy and juicier than the 2013, it has a little more volume and ripeness. This is possibly a more complete vintage, but somehow the wine comes through as less exciting than the 2013. 4,250 bottles 200 magnums and 50 double magnums were filled in May 2016.
