Older vines from parcels in Lutzmannsburg. 24 months in old barrels. Shining mid crimson. Open and aromatic: floral and intensely pure dark-fruited, with a sweetness all wrapped up in the finest of tannins. A hint of stemmy freshness in the aroma too, but it is very subtle. Tannins are firmer here than on the Lutzmannsberg and with a depth that is more like velvet than the drier more paper-fine tannins of the above. Deep, gently chewy, generous and still elegant. (JH)

The 2021 Blaufränkisch Reserve was harvested in Lutzmannsburg. It's made from older vines and spent two years in large, used barrels. A fine, pure note of blueberry soon turns into aromatic mulberry on the nose; this is red fruit focused with the merest tinge of aromatic blue highlights and a note of dried oakleaf. The palate is cooling and refreshing, like a blanket of tender redness, pervaded by fine, slightly grippy tannins that release more of that oakleaf notion, but the core here is freshness and acidity. Oakleaf, smoke and stone always hover in the background. The 2021 is beautifully statuesque, graceful and poised. (Bone-dry)
