75% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec, all aged in concrete. Dark purplish crimson. Not much nose. But a very solid palate. Thick, marked tannins and no shortage of acidity but a slight shortage of fruit in the middle. Very edgy. I wonder what this would have been like with oak ageing to round it out? (JR)

The 2016 Chateau de Pitray is 100% Cabernet Franc and expresses the variety well with lovely earthy black fruit and a touch of bell pepper. The palate is medium-bodied and apart from the structure, quite Loire-like with that bell pepper note towards the finish. It just finishes a little short, but otherwise, this is a delicious, personality-driven Cabernet Franc.
