Score 90/100 · Drink 2021-2031, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Jul 2021

The 2019 Mercurey Vieilles Vignes is showing beautifully, unfurling in the glass with aromas of berries, cassis, sweet spices, smoked meats and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, rich and textural, with fine depth at the core, powdery tannins and succulent acids, it's a fleshy, gourmand red that's already drinking well.

The 2019 Mercurey Vieilles Vignes has a punchy but well defined bouquet with ample raspberry, redcurrant and cranberry scents, a touch of loam and fern emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a gorgeous, voluminous entry of red berry fruit, slightly confit in style, hints of white pepper and sage. This has a caressing mouthfeel and real depth towards the finish. Utterly delicious.

Slightly raw note on the nose with some leafiness. But this is followed by a substantial, if robust rather than subtle, mouthful of fruit, and some slight bitterness on the end. Country wine… but sincere. (JR)
