This is a small production of just 986 bottles that Luca Roagna sources from a tiny parcel that he once described to me as a "house garden" more than a vineyard. The 2017 Barolo del Comune di Barolo is made with fruit from Terlo, and the vines are more than 50 years old. There is a hint of ripeness from the hot vintage with baked plum and blackcurrant. But the wine shows a nuanced and complex side with layers of grilled herb and crushed flowers.

The 2017 Barolo del Comune di Barolo is laced with sweet dried cherry, incense, tobacco, cedar and mint. Silky, soft and quite open, the 2017 is a fine choice for drinking now and over the next 10-15 years. It is one of the most open-knit and accessible of the Roagna 2017s, helped by an extra kick of mid-palate sweetness most of the Barbarescos don't have, at least not at this stage.
