The 2016 Vintage Port is a blend of 35% Touriga Franca, 15% Touriga Nacional and various others, coming in with about 100 grams of residual sugar. This was in bottle for about two months when tasted. Opening with fine, classic flavors, it also has some tannic grip that is rather impressive. As it evolves in the glass, it shows fresher and lifted fruit, the fine intensity of flavor prevailing. Yet it seems even more powerful then. I loved the firm and flavorful finish. This seems like a pretty terrific Offley, although it is probably still bested by its siblings in this report, the Sandeman and the Ferreira (separately listed). It has, perhaps, more power than the Sandeman but not the same expression of fruit. This seemed a little more stolid after tasting those two siblings. In the long run, Sandeman and Ferreira will win, but this is still impressive.

Cask sample. 45% Touriga Nacional, 45% Touriga Franca, 10% Tinta Roriz. Black cherry, strong springtime floral scent and ripe bramble fruit. Much firmer tannic structure than most 2016s, but doesn’t seem to have quite the depth of flavour and persistence to back it up. Still a little awkward at this stage. (RH)
