The 2009 Coleraine has a very intense bouquet with blackberry, cassis and crushed violet scents, perhaps a little Margaux-like in style. Again, there is fine delineation and well-integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with a dash of black pepper and allspice on the entry. Gentle but insistent grip, quite linear and a little sturdiness towards the finish. This is the more mature vintage that I would unequivocally hold back and by direct comparison, maybe the 2007 has a touch more charm. Tasted from a bottle shipped directly from the estate at the Coleraine vertical in London.

Right in its drinking window, the 2009 Coleraine is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, matured in mostly new French oak. Damp earth, cigar box, vanilla and cassis all appear on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate remains richly textured and velvety, finishing long, with a hint of dark chocolate. Where well-stored and sound of cork, it should drink well for another decade.

52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc Dark crimson. Subtle and broad and not too worked. Fresh and dry rather than sweet. Tastes Bordeaux-like but it has a rather dry, sudden finish. Tougher than some – Te Mata? (JR)
