Sweet and rich with less tannin than the Grèves 2020 but still that bitter finish. (JR)

The 2020 Beaune Clos des Mouches Rouge 1er Cru has a nicely-detailed bouquet with lifted red cherry and raspberry scents, quite floral and much more elegant in style compared to say, the Clos des Marconnets. The palate is balanced on the entry but here, I do find some herbaceousness, especially on the finish. It’s a bit of a let down after such promising aromatics - I would have dialled down the stem addition here. Closure: Diam

Of Chanson’s nearly 4.5 ha in Clos des Mouches, a plot of 2 ha on the upper side of the hill is planted with Chardonnay, on sandy soil over limestone. Cask sample. Rather winning floral perfume and distinctly edgy acidity – quite a novelty in 2020! Lots of texture but fruit is ripened to the right level too. Quite youthful but the elements seem well balanced.
