This bottle of 1971 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel (Auction) is the best of three or four bottles encountered. It has a wonderful bouquet with clear honey, beeswax and that scent of yellow flowers, dandelion. The palate is very youthful and well balanced, not as profound as some of the other Joh. Jos. Prüm wines that I tasted, but displaying harmony and purity that leaves you smitten. Maybe it does not quite possess the persistence of a truly profound Mosel Riesling, but it is utterly captivating. Tasted at Christies' 1971 dinner.

Green gold. Fully racy and lively. Fantastic acidity. Complex. Fully evolved. Wonderful, and reminiscent of 2001s, to have this combination of intense ripeness and acidity. (JR)
