The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées has one of the most introverted bouquets at first, but it unfurls nicely in the glass to offer intense black cherry, dark plum and bergamot aromas, a little more mineralité peeking through that carapace of fruit compared to its siblings. The palate is medium-bodied with supple fruit, well-judged acidity, blackberry and crushed strawberry laced with sea salt and a pinch of spice that segues into a linear and focused finish. Excellent, but it will require several years in bottle.

One barrel a year. Bottled only in magnums and bigger formats. For charity. 20% whole bunch. 100% new oak. Barrel sample. Transparent purple. Easy and broad and perfumed. Lifted and very lively. Seems a little less weighty than some of the other premiers crus from this address. Light menthol note on the end. (JR)
