Score 85/100 · Drink 2018-2024, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Mar 2017

The 2014 Lestage-Simon felt a tad overdone on the nose, some volatility becoming more and more evident as I aerated in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine thread of acidity and fortunately there is less volatility here. Spicy and a bit feisty for sure, it would make a thoroughly enjoyable, feral Haut-Médoc if those aromatics learned more self control.

95% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc. 12 months in barrel, 50% new. Intensely coloured, almost black, with rich, ripe black-plum fruit. Sweet and almost treacly. More savoury on the palate, roasted potato skins. Full of flavour if not especially elegant. Full throttle but harmonious. Tastes as if it has some Tannat in there. (JH)

80% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot. Inky crimson with black core. Sweet blueberries and a hint of violets. Rich and packed with dark fruit. Modern and full fruited. Firmly structured, a bit brash but everything is in balance. Perhaps it will become more elegant with time? (JH)
