The 2020 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a fruit-driven bouquet, more red fruit here, and a touch of cassis. It is a little opulent, but it is controlled and focused. The oak is also nicely integrated. This is quite a complex Volnay. It shows a fine grip without the heaviness of other wines in this flight. The acidity maintains freshness and nerve. It becomes spicy/peppery towards the finish with a lengthy tail that delivers the sapidity you expect. Good potential. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2020 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has the most backward bouquet of the Domaine’s Volnay: undergrowth, damp moss scents infusing the red fruit, broody but pure. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, a mouth-filling and voluminous Volnay with firm grip on the finish. Cellar this for 4-6 years. Excellent.
