Score 92/100 · Drink 2004-2020, Robert Parker, Jun 2001

The impressively-endowed, dark plum-colored 1997 Barolo San Giovanni (a vineyard facing Bussia) is a blockbuster. It boasts terrific concentration as well as a sweet bouquet of chocolate, blackberries, cherries, tobacco, asphalt, and smoke. Structured and powerful, with muscle to spare, this massive wine needs 3-4 years of cellaring (despite its low acidity). Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020. A Marc de Grazia Selection, various American importers, including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300, Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; tel. (773) 334-6700, and Estate Wines, Ltd., San Rafael, CA; tel. (415) 492-9411
