The 2022 Ried Setzberg Riesling Smaragd has a fine but intense, precise and spicy nose of ripe, concentrated apricot peppered with stony notes. Juicy and piquant on the palate, the Setzberg is rather slender despite its aromatics, but it is dense, spicy, persistently salty and seriously structured. There is good tightening on the finish. This is a classic Spitzer Riesling that is even better in its youth than the Singerriedel. Tasted at Schloss Dürnstein, Wachau, in September 2023.

Spitz. Large (41.4-ha) site facing from west to south-east at 216–392 m with largely sandy stony soil over paragneiss. Smells like tropical fruit and red apple. Focused with layers of herb/savoury citrus and stone. Luminous freshness, firmly etched lines and fantastic shades of colour within. Beautifully complex and long. Still very much at the beginning but for certain a fine future lies ahead. (PS)
