Score 96/100 · Drink 2016-2050, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Mar 2016

Made with about 30% of botrytis grapes (106° Oechsle), the 2014 Goldtröpfchen Auslese #16 (Versteigerung) opens with an intense, yet fine bouquet that leads to a highly fine and elegant palate, with passion fruit flavors and a stimulating salinity from the Goldtröpfchen terroir. There is a great purity and finesse, and nothing opulent here. This is a noble and still leaner Auslese that's spectacular due to its finesse and balance, rather than its concentration and sweetness.

Selected from numerous parcels, this reflects a strong botrytis component in its honeyed glaze, hint of crystallized ginger, glycerol richness and confitured mirabelle and quince. Subtle suggestions of almond and pistachio paste add allure en route to a soothingly sustained albeit somewhat superficially sweet finish.
