I adored the 2017 Mercurey 1er Cru Les Champs Martin just after it was bottled, and this reencounter confirmed its very high quality. Wafting from the glass with scents of crisp orchard fruit, green mango and white flowers, framed by subtle hints of almonds and hazelnuts, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with lively acids, superb concentration and a long, precise finish. While it's still young, it has a glorious future ahead of it.

Lorenzon's 2017 Mercurey 1er Cru Champs Martin Rouge was showing especially well, offering up a pretty bouquet of raspberries, plums, potpourri, licorice and a stable hint of dark chocolate. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a broad-shouldered frame of powdery tannin, ripe acids and a long, sapid finish. Vinified with two-thirds whole cluster, its effortlessness marks it out as one of the finest renditions of this cuvée that I've tasted.
