An entire microcosmos of spices, smoke, flint and mint. Enormously deep, concentrated and compact on the medium-bodied palate. Giant concentration at the core, and there’s also more peachy fruit there. Then comes the enormously focused finish that’s dominated by the stony and austere side of the wine’s extremely complex character. From 60-year-old vines in the Felseneck site of Bockenau. The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée unwinds in the glass with notes of green apple, white flowers, beeswax and bread dough, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny palate that's fine-boned and mineral, but also a touch reticent and compact after a recent (small) sulfite addition. I expect it will reveal more plenitude in bottle than this commentary reflects.
