The 2005 Barbaresco Il Bricco is noticeably more forward than the straight Barbaresco tasted alongside it. There is no shortage of power or intensity, but the prominent French oak has also caused the wine to mature a bit faster than I expected. Tobacco, autumn leaves, menthol, pine, licorice and a host of early tertiary notes are laced into the finish. The fruit is likely to dry out before the tannins soften, so I would not wait too long here.

Good full red. Very closed nose hints at strawberry, menthol, rose petal and smoke. Sweeter and deeper than the classico but not a soft or silky style. The intense, serious strawberry and menthol flavors are joined by a chocolatey ripeness on the back end, which features full, building, toothdusting tannins and lingering sweetness. But there's also very good energy and lift here.

The 2005 Barbaresco Il Bricco is a very elegant wine. Layers of perfumed dark red fruit, spices, French oak and roses come together with notable depth on a classic, sturdy frame of impeccable balance. Today the wine remains quite youthful but it also appears to have enough fruit to balance its structural components.

Today the wine remains quite youthful but it also appears to have enough fruit to balance its structural components. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. Proprietor Pio Boffa clearly has a huge passion for wine. Then again, he owns some of the finest vineyards in the region. My recent tasting with Boffa included a number of older Barolos, all of which had developed very nicely. Importer: Maison Marques & Domaines, Oakland, CA; tel. (510) 587-2000
