Frank Sangiovese nose with cherry and iron. Lots of character, leaner than I’d expected of the 2011 vintage and rather classy. Will come into its own with food. No sign of oak either. Grainy tannin. Can be cellared and will improve. Looks like Querciabella outperforms in complicated vintages also judging from the 2009 vintage. Unobtrusive tannins and a little tart but fragrant on the finish. Real food stuff. (WS)

The 2011 Chianti Classico Querciabella has that extra bit of depth, creaminess and mid-palate pliancy missing in the 2010, all while maintaining plenty of brightness, freshness and Sangiovese character. Freshly cut roses, sweet red berries and a hint of spices are woven into the exceptionally elegant, refined finish. Simply put, this is a striking wine from Querciabella.
About the producer
Literally translating as “beautiful oak”, Querciabella was created in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni. A pioneer in Chianti, he started farming biodynamically and experimenting with both varieties and winemaking – one result of which was Camartina, the property’s flagship Super Tuscan.
