Score 88/100 · Drink 2024-2026, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Dec 2023

In the bottle with the black label, the Capanna 2021 Rosso di Montalcino offers bright ruby fruit on the inside with forest berry and raspberry. With 25,000 bottles released, Sangiovese grapes come from schistic galestro clay soils, and the wine ages in traditional Slavonian oak casks. It ends on a slightly creamy note with earthy floral sensations and dried rose. The tannins do add an expected kick of intensity, so you might pair this bottle with a fatty food including cheese or butter to placate that power.

The 2021 Rosso di Montalcino from Capanna blends dark florals with flowery underbrush, leather and spice to form its earthy bouquet. This is silky-smooth and quite plush in feel. Cooling acids and mineral tones that add a zesty sensation toward the close. It tapers off structured and with a bitter tinge that forces the mouth to water as licorice and spice notes fade. Nicely done.
