The 2018 Beaune Cras 1er Cru, apparently Véronique Drouhin’s father’s favorite cru, has quite an opulent bouquet of black cherries, black currant and touches of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannins, moderate weight in the mouth and a slight chewiness toward a finish that requires a tad more grip.

Lots of limestone here, which tends to give more tannic structure says Véronique Drouhin. Not a very well-known wine but one her father loves. Cask sample. Mid to deep crimson. Ripe, almost overripe cherry fruit on the nose though the second sample smelled much fresher. Damsons balanced by firm, chewy texture. An honest wine, full of fruit and well structured but needs time. Just enough freshness in this vintage though the dry tannic texture increases that freshness. (JH)
