Good medium ruby. Crushed blackberry, licorice, violet and a hint of pepper on the nose and palate, plus a subtle dried fruit quality. Shows an almost pruney chocolatey character in the mouth, but this superripe malbec boasts a creamy, sophisticated texture and is nicely perked up by a peppery element. Finishes with fully ripe tannins and sneaky length.

The 2010 Reserva Malbec is raised in one-third new oak. It needs a few swirls of the glass for the bouquet to awaken, but eventually springs forth with blackberry and black olive aromas that seem suppressed, suggesting another year in bottle or a little decanting would be beneficial. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated ripe tannins, layers of toasty black cherry and cassis fruit and a nicely balanced finish that is slightly smudged. Perhaps I was expecting just a little more pizzazz? Drink 2013-2017. I spent a couple of hours visiting Terrazas de los Andes in Lujan de Cuyo. Its origins can be traced as far back as the 1950s, when Moet Chandon dispatched oenologist Renaud Poirer to Latin America. They soon established a reputation for their sparkling wines, although it was not until 1999 that they set up the winery. They have become well-known for their joint venture with Cheval Blanc, -Cheval des Andes,- which demonstrates how highly the most eminent properties in Bordeaux regard Mendoza and its potential.
