The 2016 Marsannay Champs Saint-Etienne is the only single vineyard offering from Roty apropos this AC due to frost damage, cropped at around 38hl/ha. This has quite a rich and opulent bouquet, perhaps just flirting with headiness that detracts from the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, that opulence flaunted on the nose much more controlled on the palate. The finish is quite detailed and precise. Good potential. Tasted at the Domaine.

Juicy red fruit on the palate, accompanied by attractive smoke and slate character – interesting and engaging to taste, with a long finish featuring lovely fennel and anise notes. (RH)

The 2016 Marsannay Champs Saint Etienne is excellent, exhibiting an attractive bouquet of crushed blackcurrants, licorice and rich soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and succulent palate with a ripe core of fruit, juicy acids and fine structuring tannins.

(production was cut 40% by frost): Full ruby-red. Aromas of black cherry and licorice, plus a whiff of menthol. More supple than the basic village Marsannay, with its black fruit flavors complicated by salty minerality and soil notes. Big, chewy tannins arrive fairly early. Still a bit clenched but has more sweetness, spiciness and texture than the basic village offering. Further élevage should enable this wine to absorb its 40% new oak component.
