François Mitjavile of Tertre Roteboeuf's second vintage at his second estate and much the best red served at this dinner. Very low-trained vines and 100% new oak. Still fresh and fruity – much more so than most 1989s, even those from much more reputable châteaux. (JR)

This has retained remarkable freshness aromatically for a 34 year old wine from a region of Bordeaux that is often overlooked. On the palate it has moved to tertiary character with plenty of soft leather, oyster shell, graceful redcurrant and prune fruit. Delicate overall, with a welcoming softness to the tannins, ready to drink and still full of hidden pleasures. 100% new oak. The 20% of Cabernet Sauvignon vines here are over 50 years old.

The 1989 Roc de Cambes continues to drink very well today, exhibiting aromas of rich black fruits, asphalt, black truffle and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and muscular, it's chunkier and less sensual than Mitjaville's subsequent vintages, but it remains a very persuasive wine.
