From a coolish, west-facing part of the historic cru and vinified in doppelstück for six months, the 2023 Schloss Johannisberg Bronzelack Riesling Trocken is deep and intense on the flinty and fresh, pure and substantial, terroir-driven nose. Full and round on the palate, this is a quite rich but elegant dry Riesling with fine phenols and a powerful, structural finish. Complex and full-bodied, this Schloss Johannisberger will benefit from some years of bottle age. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024.

The 2023 Riesling Schloss Johannisberg Bronzelack is made from fruit picked in cooler parcels of the Johannisberg slope, both west- and southwest-facing. It was made in 50% Doppelstück and 50% stainless steel. A streak of lime and wet stone are the first notions on the nose, followed by fern and pale Reine Claude plum, juicy and bright. An almost sylph-like lightness defines this wine with all its agility and fluidity, while lime zest and more of that stoniness border the flowing body. It closes with a clear-cut, tangy finish. For a sleek dry riesling that’s barely medium-bodied, this has fabulous concentration and aromatic complexity. A whole garden of flowers just after a summer thunderstorm when the sun returns. But also mandarin oranges and the red berry fruit of a beautiful summer. Then the racy and wet stone acidity bowls you over in the incredibly energetic and cool finish. From organically grown grapes.

50/50 stainless steel and oak. Bottled two weeks before tasting. TA 8 g/l, RS 4 g/l. Cool, closed stone. Some peach, lemon peel and green apple. Dense and deep, with a bracing sweet-and-sour interplay. Racy acidity. Unctuous, grippy and long. Needs time. (PS)
