A solid step up over the Les Origines release, the 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is made from 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah, from three separate sites, Cabrières, Coudoulet and Boislauzon. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully concentrated and layered, with top notch aromas and flavors of cassis, crushed rocks and roasted garrigue, it’s up with the top handful of wines in the vintage and will drink well for a decade or more (which is saying something in 2014).

45% Grenache, 45% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah. Rich, deeply fruited aroma but less rich on the palate. Firm, dry power, with thick compact tannins holding the fruit captive at the moment but it is all there and ready to fly with a little longer in bottle. (JH)
