The 2018 La Croix de Pez has an attractive, outgoing bouquet of cranberry and raspberry fruit, allspice, cedar and just a touch of fennel. There is plenty of personality and charm locked up in these aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and grainy tannins, offering black cherries, raspberry and a light briny note toward the finish that steers this toward Saint-Estèphe. This is not a château that I am familiar with, but this is a very good effort and it should drink well for the a decade or so.

Red plums, cassis, camphor, and floral notes all emerge from the 2018 Château La Croix De Pez. This pure, medium-bodied, nicely concentrated Saint- Estèphe has ripe yet building tannins, terrific balance, and a great finish. I love the purity of fruit, and it's going to benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and drink well over the following decade.

Full bottle 1,240 g. In the vineyard, 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc. Deep crimson. Very sweet-smelling, lifted black fruit, more damson than cassis. Almost a little too ripe, with hints of dried red fruits, but there’s surprising freshness on the palate. Relatively light tannins for the appellation and juicy on the finish but that aroma of dried fruits worries me a little, hence the rather short drinking window. (JH)

A dense and cool red with blackberry and bark character, full body and chewy yet polished tannins.
