Score 88/100 · Drink 2019-2021, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, May 2019

The 2014 Pergolaia is a blend of Sangiovese (80%), Merlot (10%) and 5% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This comes from a difficult, cool vintage and was grown according to organic methods, such as seaweed-extract and fertilization with estate compost. The result is a bright, fresh, everyday wine with a moderate alcohol content of 13%. Some 40,000 bottles were made.

Mainly Sangiovese with a small amount of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Dark ruby with orange tinges. Herbal cherry nose with hint of tobacco leaf heralding some development is under way, and with a sweet layer of cherry underneath. Dark supple cherry fruit with lots of coating tannins. Perhaps lacking a little depth, but a great effort for one of the coldest and wettest vintages in the last 50 years. (WS)
