The top bottled wine here is the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cotes Capelan, which is about 80% Grenache, with Mourvèdre and Syrah accounting for the balance. It starts off a bit closed, so splash it around or decant it a bit in advance of serving to see floral notes blossom, followed by mixed red and black cherries and berries. Medium to full-bodied, it's incredibly silky and long on the licorice-tinged finish.

80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre. Tasted blind. Menthol and leather on the nose. Heavy, thick and tarry on the palate. Loud, bolshy fruit. Very much the archetype of steroidal Châteauneuf. (RH)

The flagship is the 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Capelan, and in 2017 it’s 80% Grenache, and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre brought up in 70% new barrel (although you wouldn’t know it by tasting it). Already complex and layered, with fabulous notes of saddle leather, smoked black fruits, garrigue and lavender, this beauty is full-bodied, powerful and concentrated, yet has stunning purity and freshness. It’s up with the gems of the vintage.
