Monforte d’Alba. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Punchy nose of maracuja and raspberry that becomes more complex the longer it sits in the glass. Complex and a little ethereal. Embryonic, aromatic fruit on the palate with rich, chewy tannins that become a little dominant on the finish. Needs much more time to show its true colours. (WS)

The Parusso 2020 Barolo Mosconi has canned peach, dried papaya skin and sour stemmy fruit on the close. There is straight-press pomegranate juice that adds a bitter slant, or an almost spicy Amarone-like bent with clove and cinnamon. I am reminded of Angostura bitters or amaro liqueur with orange tree bark. Leave it to Marco Parusso to make one of the most original and distinctive wines in the appellation. This is a creation of 4,300 bottles.

The 2020 Barolo Mosconi marries the natural intensity and breadth of this site with the savory whole-cluster drive that is such a signature here. Black cherry, plum, mocha, incense, lavender and dried flowers fill out the layers. I would give this a few years to settle down.
