100% Merlot. From a notoriously unsuccessful vintage but still aged 18 to 24 months in French oak barriques. Blackish ruby with an evolved rim. Very sweet, mature nose. Then pretty tight and unyielding on the palate with vanilla notes almost like an American-oak-aged Rioja and a furry finish. Blind, I might well take it for an even older Rioja! Rather an inky finish. I think you could find more pleasure for £25 elsewhere. (JR)

Some berry and blackberry character with spices and stones. Medium body and firm tannins. A little light.

Glossy and perfumed with cherry fruit, some peppery spice and a touch of vanilla too. Chewy and substantial in both tannin and body. Liquorice and leather – has all the tropes of claret but the finish needs time in bottle to extend. (RH)

Tasted blind. Deep garnet. A bit malty on the palate and rather lean in the middle though the tannins are more delicate than some. Hard finish. (JH)
